WHAT IS LIFE ABOUT?
In this age of instant everything, smart phones, and AI many young people are ditching the traditional route to the American dream. As the veil lifts on the government corporate ties, rampant inflation, entertainment propaganda and manufactured meats, people are asking: what is life about?
I see many posts on Reddit (I love Reddit.) of young men and women that are lost, seeking guidance of what to do with their lives. I understand many just want to know which direction to go to earn a decent living. However, many more are looking for purpose. What is purpose? How do you find it? What the fuck are we doing here?
Look, I been there. When I was about 14 years old, I started to express myself. I had a lot of rage, confusion, and pressure. I always knew I wanted to be great. I wanted to do more than I was doing. I did not understand what I was searching for or how to reach it. What did I do? I hung out with misfits and got into trouble. I thought the people in my world didn’t understand us. My friends understood me. However, that did not give me purpose.
It wasn’t until I lost my freedom that I learned what life is all about. Entertainment and feeling of belonging satisfy the pleasure sensors but ended. That stuff couldn’t help me anymore. I had to do some soul searching. I had to find a power to rely on beyond myself to get through something that seemed so insurmountable. I want to share a Bible scripture that has stuck with me all these years:
Ecclesiastes 5:18: “This is what I have seen to be good and proper: that one should eat and drink and find enjoyment for all the hard work at which he toils under the sun during the few days of life that the true God has given him, for that is his reward.”
To expound on this concept that I had discovered, what life is about to me is freedom. It is so easy in today’s world to get caught in distractions and this never-ending pursuit of money. The real win is eating tasty food, drinking good drinks, laughing with family and friends, and making beautiful memories with the people we love on this beautiful Earth. That is so freeing from the cacophony of life. It is also freeing to know that we can choose to turn the noise down and focus on the beauty.
This concept changed my life. I am not a devout Christian nor am I deeply religious person. However, I gained many insights from the words of the Bible. I would encourage any person seeking principles and wisdom to pick up an ancient text and begin reading. Old tomes such as:
- The Epic of Gilgamesh
- The Code of Hammurabi
- The Vedas
- The Bhagavad Gita
- The Tao Te Ching
- The Analects of Confucius
- The Works of Homer
- Plato’s Dialogues
- The Quran
- The Bible
- The Pyramid Texts
- The Book of the Dead
I have not read all these texts (Definitely on my reading list.) nor do I believe, endorse, or condone everything you may read in these texts. Reading these texts will give you a deeper understanding of culture around the world as they are filled with wisdom. Use the wisdom of those that walked before you to gain perspective. That’s what worked for me. Now, find what works for you.
